Activated Carbon

Activated carbon (also known as activated charcoal) is a highly porous material made from carbon-rich substances like wood, coal, or coconut shells. It is “activated” through a heating process that increases its surface area and porosity, enabling it to adsorb (trap) impurities, gases, and chemicals. Due to its large surface area, activated carbon is commonly used for filtration, purification, and detoxification in applications such as water treatment, air purification, and medical treatments (like poison ingestion). Its ability to adsorb contaminants makes it effective in removing odours, heavy metals, and organic compounds.
